Online Advocacy Masterclass: Sen Diane Savino on the NY Senate Floor

This isn’t a political blog – but every once in a while, you come across speeches from politicians, like Diane Savino, that are so compelling they are legendary.

Senator Savino’s speech of 2 December 2009 in favour of the Marriage Equality Bill on the New York Senate floor is another online advocacy masterclass.

Senator Savino’s not reading from a script. She’s speaking from her heart – in a structured and cogent manner. She acknowledges she’s nervous – and that’s because “lives hang in the balance”. She grounds her arguments in the legal postulates of freedom and equality and addresses her opponets’ arguments in three different ways – all of which keep me hooked.

And her conclusion: “We have nothing to fear from love and commitment” ?  Try arguing against that.

Brilliant.

NB Thanks to courtneymandryk.com for posting this transcript of Senator Savino’s speech.
