Clearly, the question is whether separate is equal. Civil Partnerships were rightly hailed as a major step toward equality, but the time has now come either to declare all civil unions equal in status, and reserve 'marriage' to religious institutions, or to declare that marriage is open to all consenting adults.

Meanwhile Newington Green Unitarian Church will not conduct weddings for the same reason - support for equality. The law will not allow civil partnerships to be celebrated in churches or with any religious content. So since we cannot offer civil partnerships alongside weddings - demonstrating in another way how they are not truly equal at all, instead we offer blessings for all couples.
